The Anton Szandor LaVey Photographic Archive

Anton LaVey was one of the most photographed figures in modern occult history, yet many of the images that survive online today exist only as faded scans, damaged press clippings, compressed JPEGs or poorly reproduced copies passed from site to site for decades. Some are instantly recognisable. Others capture quieter moments: LaVey at the Black House, walking the streets of San Francisco, surrounded by family and associates, appearing before the press, or simply caught away from the carefully constructed public image of the Church of Satan.

This section of Hellfire Coven is dedicated to locating, preserving and restoring those photographs. Wherever possible, we will clean damaged images, repair deterioration, restore lost detail and carefully colourise selected photographs while remaining faithful to the original composition. We will also document what can be established about each image, including the photographer, approximate date, location, publication history and the circumstances surrounding the photograph.

The aim is to build a growing visual record of Anton Szandor LaVey and the early history of modern Satanism, treating these photographs as historical documents rather than disposable internet images. Some details may remain uncertain, and when they do, we will say so. As more photographs surface and better sources become available, this archive will continue to expand, preserving an important part of Satanic and San Francisco countercultural history for a new generation.
